North Coast Design Project 1
A palatial yet homely house in the country, this project by North Coast Design is the epitome of comfortable family living meets striking design. The large property permitted an expansive plan, with a 35-metre frontage providing an impressive visual upon approach. Inside, the large floor plan gives the family ample room to move and interact as they wish, as well as creating that all-important ‘wow’ factor thanks to the rooms’ sheer scale.
Conceived and created for Hayden Ballantyne of the Fremantle Dockers, this home is defined by the central living area, off which two wings – one for children, one for parents – extend. The huge pitched roof awnings to the front and back elevations give the house a distinct chalet sensibility, which is reinforced by the inclusion of impressive timber columns.
The central living space is graced with a double-height, cathedral roof that floats overhead and is anchored by a huge stone-clad chimney around which family life revolves. The double-sided fireplace gives warmth to the living area as well as to the dining space, and makes the whole area the ultimate cosy winter retreat. What is particularly special about the living zone is its transparency, with floor-to-ceiling windows creating stunning views to either side, as well as lifting the visual appeal of the entire home.
The main bedroom and ensuite is reminiscent of a luxury hotel, with walk-in wardrobe and integrated bathroom positioned to either end of a generous sleeping zone, which takes in the landscape beyond. Similarly, one can sink into the free-standing bath tub and enjoy the show as brilliant sunsets that are exclusive to the rural location light up the sky. In the custom-built kitchen, timber and stone continue the natural-material appeal that both respects the home’s organic setting and expresses its contemporary sensibility. Other luxury inclusions include a theatre room and a generous garage.
