Solar Dwellings Project 8
Located in Duncraig, this home by Solar Dwellings has been created for universal access and is both energy and water efficient. Designed with sustainability in mind, the use of solar passive design requires no maintenance and no power source, making it very cost-effective. Boasting smooth concrete floors throughout the home, this chic and comfortable space is designed to accommodate for a family of four and visitors who come for extended vacations.
This sustainable sanctuary combines effective insulation, solar panelling and shading and window covering to create a smart energy-efficient home. The homeowners explain their vision for the house as coming from “a want to exist with our environment rather than to fight against it”. The elegant open plan kitchen and dining area leads into the home’s outdoor space, surrounding itself with green spaces and natural light. The north-facing dining area is designed to attract the greatest amount of light in the winter, providing a comfortable year-round temperature and space for all the family to come together.
The large sliding doors immerse this area with the outdoor space, taking full advantage of the natural light and adding to the home’s stylistic and modern qualities. This open-plan design also allows for hallways to be kept at a minimum to reduce heating non-habitable spaces in the home.
As well as allowing for the most natural light to run through the home, shade sails and a deciduous tree have been installed to protect the living area from the harsh summer sun. Blackout blinds are also a prominent feature, reducing the radiant heat temperatures.
