Hillam Architects Project 1

Situated in the established area of Dalkeith, this classic 1980s residence has undergone an alluring alteration. Hillam Architects was asked to take on the project, which was a complete renovation of the original, brickwork property. Realising the home’s potential, the clients’ brief was for open-plan living that would seamlessly link to the new outdoor entertainment area, and for many of the existing house elements to be maintained and enhanced.

Hillam Architects sought to create an efficient and modern family home, which was fundamental to the clients’ brief. In order to achieve an alteration of this scale, Hillam Architects had to work closely with Andreotta Cardenosa Consulting Engineers, a collaboration that made this home the work of many dedicated professionals. The carefully-considered renovation respectfully maintained the overall form of the existing dwelling, while simultaneously manipulating the plan to suit the clients’ modern lifestyles.

Upon arrival, the home’s entryway is immediately striking, clad gracefully with blackbutt timber boards. Creating a visual connection between the interior and exterior was paramount, so the house was re-orientated to both the street and expansive rear garden to capture light.

Hillam Architects collaborated closely with Taylor Landscape to ensure all outdoor spaces flowed seamlessly with the architecture. The extensive landscaping around the perimeter of the site was carefully planned to contribute to the leafy suburban context. The sensual form and warm textures of the upper exterior level contrast beautifully with the white-rendered, angular canopy that frames the front door and creates a dramatic entry.

A natural palette of contrasting timbers helps to soften the angular structure of the home. Inside, the main living area boasts a double-height space, which creates an airy and luxurious atmosphere. The placement of the living and dining areas provides the clients with coveted views of the backyard and pool area. Featuring one of the most generous outdoor entertaining spaces Hillam Architects has ever conceived, this residence is one that is sure to impress!
