This custom-built single-storey Jolimont property exudes practicality, comfort, and a high standard of design. The highly contemporary home comprises three bedrooms, a study, an open-plan living, dining and entertaining area, and a central kitchen, which is situated next to the laundry and alfresco for optimum convenience. The property also has a large double garage, which includes a storage area, a car hoist and durable epoxy-finished flooring, which is ideal for automotive enthusiasts.

The clients wanted a sustainable and accessible home that would suit their lifestyle and meet their future comfort needs. Right Homes achieved this by employing a passive solar design, and by incorporating smart-glass windows, and ceiling fans, as well as wall and ceiling insulation. A photovoltaic (PV) with battery backup and solar hot-water system were also installed. The home is also highly accessible and includes wide doorframes and lever handles throughout each room, as well as flush thresholds in showers to accommodate all levels of ability.

The home’s passive solar design incorporates the Housing Industry Association’s (HIA) GreenSmart Principles and is highly energy- and water-efficient. With an 8.5-star Building Energy Rating Scheme (BERS) rating, the home features energy-efficient lighting, as well as water-saving tapware that is plumbed to two underground 7,000L rainwater tanks, which results in a potable-water reduction of approximately 80 per cent.

Right Homes is a boutique residential building company that was established in 2006 by directors Gary and Anna Wright. It operates within the Perth metropolitan area.

The company specialises in designing and constructing affordable and sustainable homes for the future. The team provides a complete service to its clients, starting with the design of their homes, right through to construction completion.

Right Homes has won countless awards over the years. The company was named the winner of the 2017 HIA Australian GreenSmart Water Efficiency award, as well as the Townhouse/Villa Development award. Right Homes also won the same awards at state-level, in addition to being named winner of the Design Concept category, and a finalist in the Custom Built Home category.

Project 1

This unique project showcases a range of sustainable features that generate a communal eco-friendly environment.

Consisting of two townhouses and five units, the owners of this apartment block (The Green Swing) wanted a quality, sustainable development that promotes green living.

Each apartment features a 9 – 10 star energy rating and quality double-glazed windows, while each townhouse showcases three storeys of living space, including an open-plan kitchen, living and dining area.

The project was a joint venture designed by The Green Swing, architect Sid Thoo from Concept Design, and Right Homes. The residential complex was also built by Right Homes.

Featuring solar panels, water tanks, a communal vegetable patch, bike store and a barbecue area, the apartment block has minimised its carbon footprint. Based on its Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) results, over time the complex will use up to 80 per cent less energy than a standard home or apartment complex.

The finished project is proof that environmentally-friendly living is stylish, functional, and above all, achievable.

Project 2

The professional team at Right Homes live and build by the philosophy of affordable, sustainable living, and this is never more evident than in this recent award-winning residential project. Aiming to combine the sensibility of green construction with all the comforts of modern living, the outcome is a consciously-designed dwelling to suit families in this generation and beyond. Taking out the Waterwise – Under $500,000 award at the 2017 Master Builders Western Australia Housing Excellence Awards, as well as the national and state Greensmart Project Home of the Year award in 2016, this home illustrates Right Homes’ commitment to intelligent, sustainable design.

Utilising pioneering and performance-driven ideas and technologies, Right Homes was able to create a home with a nine-star energy efficiency rating that utilises nature, while drastically reducing the need for expensive artificial heating and cooling. Fitted with a passive solar system, the walls and floors collect and distribute heat in the winter and reject solar heat in the summer to ensure a mild and comfortable temperature year-round. The use of low- emissivity glass windows and doors assists in securing warmth inside during the colder months.

The selection of building materials and resources were carefully measured, taking into account ecologically-minded considerations such as sustainability and recyclability. Featuring recycled rockwool for insulation, double-cavity brickwork and high-quality LED lighting, this home is guaranteed to have minimal impact on the environment, while simultaneously affording all contemporary luxuries.

The principles of sustainability feature strongly in the inclusion of water-wise technologies throughout the home. Water-efficient tapware is fitted throughout the property, whilst the bore water system that’s installed in the external garden areas and pool ensure that water conservation is accomplished with ease. Importantly, the property also has the capacity to capture and utilise rainwater.

As part of Right Homes’ green ethos, ensuring that homes are future-proofed for generations to come is of maximum importance. In addition to the use of durable building materials, Right Homes have considerately used asthma-and- allergy friendly low-VOC paints and an Odyssey ventilation system from Edmonds to allow future families to enjoy the home as profoundly as preceding ones.

The single-storey home has been designed with family comfort at the forefront, and contains communal areas and private spaces for both parents and children. The open-floor plan is organic and breathable, with bright, airy spaces that flow easily into one another, while allowing for plenty of natural light.

The timeless, minimalist design strikes a perfect balance between style and functionality, as the clean and uncluttered concept allows for a calm, hassle-free tranquillity.
