Situated on an exposed site overlooking the Southern Ocean, Horizon Design’s client had two basic concepts for the company’s award-winning building designer, Rob Skipworth, to work from.

Firstly, the building had to be energy-efficient, and as self-sufficient as possible, in regards to water and power usage. The other major design consideration was to take advantage of the extensive views of the ocean to the east, and inlet to the north. Juggling these requirements, Skipworth implemented smart design and materials throughout the whole process.

The client’s lifestyle was an important consideration, resulting in the entire upper-floor being reserved for living areas, all with access to the awesome ocean views. To achieve this, cantilevered balcony slabs were used with no interrupting columns, and the use of extensive glazing meant that all upper-floor living areas became visually connected to eachother and the alfresco area. Skipworth also installed a lift to all three levels of the home for easy access.

The environmental credentials of the home were boosted by the installation of a 3.3kw solar power system, two large water tanks, an ATU waste treatment system, as well as all the cavity brickwork having ‘Aircell’ cavity insulation.

The living areas feature in-slab heating, using water from the hot water system heat pumps and powered by the rooftop solar cells. Through these intelligent features, Horizon Design proves that being environmental doesn’t mean sacrificing comfort.

Correct choice of materials was an essential aspect of the design, with the house needing to withstand harsh weather conditions. Such materials included stone, concrete, fibre cement and zinc cladding, which were used extensively throughout the home. To further facilitate wind protection, entry to the home is located at the side of the building, with a large overhanging balcony for weather protection. The upper-floor alfresco area is tucked behind the fully glazed lounge/dining area, thereby allowing for views of the ocean while blocking much of the wind.

The alfresco area also boasts a large solar pergola, allowing for rain protection and access to winter sun, depending on the weather.

Horizon Design achieved the clients’ brief as well as mastering the creation of a home that boasts brilliant architectural elements and sustainable features.
