As winner of the 2017 Housing Industry Association (HIA) – CSR Western Australian Housing award for South West Renovation/Addition Project of the Year, this striking addition in Yallingup showcases daring design, exceptional engineering and innovative construction. Built by Tallwood Constructions and designed by Dane Design Australia, the building met all the client’s desires, exceeded their expectations and created an exciting visual element on a challenging site.

The brief required that the new structure satisfy extreme bushfire regulations. The structure needed to withstand all weather conditions, while requiring low maintenance and taking advantage of the panoramic views. In addition, its aesthetic had to contrast with the design of the existing property. After carefully considering the design’s requirements and materials, the team at Tallwood Constructions brought this vision to life.

The building launches out of the landscape on steel posts and boldly pushes skywards. Clad in Corten steel and connected to the main house by a glass-bridge walkway, the entire building provides views of the ever-changing coastal vistas through every window – each one offering a different screenshot.

The overall space culminates in an open-air triangular apex, from which the panoramic views of the surrounding valleys can be enjoyed. Motorised aluminium venetian blinds ensure the area is suited to the variety of weather conditions to which the beautiful area is exposed.

Not surprisingly, the client was delighted with the project. “The result is a structure that I absolutely love... [It was] built for living in, looking out of and just looking at. It really transforms how I feel about my home.”

With more than 20 years’ experience in construction, Tallwood Constructions designs and constructs award-winning new homes, renovations, and additions throughout the South-West region of Western Australia, as well as Perth. Building on difficult sites is often required, and the whole Tallwood Constructions team follow the philosophy that bringing a dream home to life lies in one-on-one personalised service, a high level of supervision and fastidious quality control.

Project 1

This beautiful bespoke home was built by Tallwood Constructions and designed by Dane Richardson of Dane Design Australia. The home was the winner of the New Residential Building 351m²–450m² award as well as the Residential Interiors award at the 2012 Building Designers Australia (BDA) WA chapter design awards.

The most striking feature of this home is its exquisite façade, which appears to be growing out of the top of the hill on which it sits, blending seamlessly with its surrounds. Inside, the home has been split over three levels with three spacious double bedrooms on the lower level, living areas located on the middle level and the main bedroom on the top level. Every room features huge glass windows and boasts commanding hinterland views, which extend out over Geographe Bay.

A gorgeous combination of ‘Big Rive Vic Ash’ timber flooring with Ecostone ‘Carrera’ tiles has been used to great effect, beautifully accentuating the off-form concrete interior walls.

Adding further visual interest to the design, dramatic dry-laid granite feature walls appear throughout the home’s interior and exterior, seamlessly tying the two living spaces together.

Outside, a covered barbecue and dining area is the focus of all outdoor entertaining, providing a fantastic place to relax and interact with guests. The large in-ground pool features exposed aggregate ‘Pebble Beach’ concrete and is surrounded by a frameless glass fence, ensuring uninterrupted views of the property’s beautiful surrounds.

Since 1998 managing director of Tallwood Constructions Alex Campbell has directed his attention to quality constructions, working closely with designers and architects to fulfil their design requirements in the South-West, Perth and surrounding areas. It is Campbell’s philosophy that the successful ‘bringing to life’ of a client’s dream home lies within one-to-one personalised service, a high level of supervision and fastidious quality control through all stages.

Tallwood Constructions is the proud recipient of a long list of industry accolades, winning three state and 21 South-West Housing Industry Association (HIA) awards in the last four years.

In 2011, Tallwood Constructions took out the State Country Home of the Year and State and South-West Innovation in Housing Project of the Year categories, as well as the award for South-West Home of the Year. The company was also named the winner of the South-West Renovation of the Year category and winner of the West Outdoor Project of the Year.

Tallwood Constructions was also awarded with Renovation/Addition Project $500,001 and Over, Renovation/Additional Project of the Year, Special Purpose Housing Project of the Year and Outdoor Project of the Year at the 2013 South-West HIA awards.

Project 2

Tallwood Constructions has knocked it out of the park with this dramatic two-storey property located in close proximity to Eagle Bay. The home was designed by Dane Richardson of Dane Design Australia, who was awarded Designer of the Year for the project at the South-West Home Industry Association (HIA) awards. Tallwood Constructions received five South-West HIA awards for the residence, including 2016 South-West Timber Framed Home, 2016 South-West Innovation in Housing and 2016 South-West Outdoor Project. Tallwood Constructions was also a finalist in the Custom Built Home category ($1,500,000 and over).

The design had to be fully customised to suit the difficult site on which the home sits, and address both its advantages and restrictions. Although its commanding position nestled high on top of a hill makes this property one-of-a-kind, the site is one of steepest and most difficult Tallwood Constructions has ever built on.

Due to its position, the home is also subject to some pretty severe weather, which also had to be taken into consideration during the design process. Thankfully, Tallwood Constructions and Richardson were able to use the steepness of the block to their advantage by incorporating the games room and main bedroom in the undercroft.

To address the challenges presented by the extreme weather, double-glazing has been used on all windows, helping to trap heat in during winter and provide significant energy saving benefits year-round.

As the clients requested the home take advantage of its stunning surrounds, its elevated position on the steep slope has allowed it to maximise the extensive views of Eagle Bay. Thoughtful design has also provided the main living and entertainment zones with unrestricted views down the hillside and to the beaches. This includes the infinity-edge pool, which is surrounded by a spacious tiled terrace that faces the sea.

Aesthetically, the home gives off a distinctly dramatic vibe and makes a striking first impression due to the use of dark stained timber and dry-laid granite walls.

Internally, timber flooring gives the home warmth and depth, which directly contrasts with its exterior. An understated colour palette of cream and white, as well as various timber finishes throughout, completes the cosy interior.

Plenty of green-living features have been incorporated into the design, providing the homeowners with substantial energy-saving benefits. The majority of the walls and the roof frame were constructed from structural insulated panels (SIPs), which provide great insulation and acoustic benefits. Solar heating powers the pool, which further benefits the clients by reducing energy-running costs.

Recycled materials have been used where possible, including the floorboards, which are made from recycled Grey Ironbark timber. An Aquarius Wastewater Systems alternative treatment unit (ATU) has been installed to dispose of septic waste material, allowing wastewater to be recycled and diminishing the need for additional water resources.

Tallwood Constructions has been building award-winning homes in Dunsborough, the South-West and Perth since Alex Campbell established the business in 1998. The company specialises in major renovations, knockdown/rebuild and luxury custom-built homes.

Following its inception, Tallwood Constructions has received the HIA South-West Home of the Year award three times since 2009, and the state HIA Renovation/Addition Project award in 2013 and 2014.

The company’s philosophy has always been to build Australia’s next best home. Campbell and his team of talented architects and designers work collaboratively with the clients and highly qualified tradespeople to deliver only the top standard of work.

Project 3

This stunning home in eagle bay boasts luxury across every level. Built by Tallwood Constructions and designed by naked Architecture in collaboration with Fringe Architects, the home’s striking three-dimensional floor plan features soaring roof overhangs and expansive glass to the upper floor, which provides endless views from its elevated position.

Taking into account the property’s sloping site, space has been maximised with the main living areas positioned on the upper floor, which allows the homeowners to enjoy the vistas of both eagle bay and beyond to geographe bay.

The home features a rainwater harvesting system, double-glazed windows with thermally-broken frames and hydronic floor heating throughout the upper floor. on the ground level, the solar-heated in-ground pool is surrounded by a spacious, bluestone-paved alfresco and a complete outdoor kitchen. The pool’s infinity edge provides even more spectacular views down to the coastline.

Not surprisingly, the clients were delighted with the result, which is evident in their testimonial.

“Deciding who is going to be trusted with the task of building your dream house is a major decision,” said the homeowner.

“Luckily for us, they were also the best on pricing, and after we had seen a number of their recent projects, we knew we had made the right decision. Tallwood Constructions did an amazing job building what is an amazing house.”
