Designed and built by arc seven.1’s proprietors, Jason Saunders and Nicole Tollman, the featured project was a major renovation of an existing ten-year-old home. The clients, a middle-aged couple with grown-up children, had outgrown the existing facilities of their home’s courtyard, which included a large pool and rundown cooking facilities. In order to move comfortably into the next phase of their lives, the couple wanted to revamp this courtyard so they could fully utilise the space again.

Among the things to be addressed was the existing pool, as it had been used less and less over the years, and the clients’ need for a sophisticated general outdoor entertaining space increased. They requested that the outdoor space be specifically suited to entertaining, and that there was a clean connection between the existing house and new additions – it was essential that everything flowed seamlessly.

Within the courtyard area, the clients wanted an outdoor kitchen, a dining area and a separate sitting space. Arc seven.1 has created these spaces, successfully integrating them while still ensuring they are separate, distinct zones.

Even though the form of the new renovation is somewhat different to the existing house, arc seven.1 took great care to ensure the link between old and new was seamless. This harmony between the existing and new space was created by sourcing polished porcelain tiles that matched the existing flooring, ensuring the renovation blends beautifully with the rest of the home.

As the exterior of the existing house was predominately cream and black, material and colour selection was crucial. A palette of strong, bold colours and materials, including bluestone pavers, timber decking, exposed timber battens painted in a ‘Turkish Coffee’ stain and solid dark paint on the boundary wall were used, allowing for an intimate external space to be formed – one that fit perfectly with the current home.

Decorative detailing includes a feature pendant over the dining table, an external fireplace, a wall-mounted television, feature lighting and a water feature, all of which contribute to the chic and contemporary ambience of the newly created space.

Generally specialising in upper-end residential projects, arc seven.1 takes an approach that ensures the design focus is as much on landscaping as the built form and interior fit-out, creating a harmonious link between the three distinct disciplines.

The multi award-winning practice was established by Jason Saunders and Nicole Tollman in 2004. With more than 20 years of experience, the small, committed arc seven.1 team offers a personalised, individual design service.

The team’s most recent awards include Building Designers Association of Western Australia (BDAWA) awards for Residential Alterations and Additions more than $200,000 and for Best Residential Interior.

Arc seven.1 works on new home builds as well as renovations and works on between six and ten projects each year. The company is available for work throughout Western Australia and can help you create a functional yet exciting design solution for your home or renovation.
