Maximising the elevated site to take full advantage of the panoramic river and city views was the main request from the owners of this Anthony Raso Design home. The stunning Attadale residence received a finalist award in the category for Residential Buildings over 450m2 at the 2011 Building Designers Association of Western Australia (BDAWA) awards.

The home had to accommodate two adults and four children, with natural light, separate zoned areas, security, and low-maintenance also important factors. The natural topography of the site, with a 10m rise from the road to the rear of the block, created the biggest challenge in the design. There was also a height caveat on the site, which ultimately determined the finished floor level of the home.

With views and northern orientation to the front of the site, Anthony Raso Design positioned the home as far back and high as possible to maximise the views. A rear laneway provided the opportunity to position the covered parking area to the rear of the home, eliminating a large garage detracting from the streetscape. Entry for visitors is via a covered gatehouse at street level, providing security and protection from the elements. Paved steps lead to an impressive marble-clad entry porch.

The kitchen, main living area and main bedroom are on the upper level to the front of the home, maximising the views. The location of these areas also takes advantage of the northern aspect of the site. Extensive full-height glazing, including frameless bi-fold doors, allows for a seamless transition to a generous balcony and barbecue area from the main living areas. A spiral staircase from the balcony provides easy access to the outdoor living and pool area below.

A study and media room are also located on the upper level. Although not positioned towards the front of the home, both rooms still maximise the fantastic outlook and an abundance of northern light through the use of cleverly positioned windows. The laundry, drying area, secure workshop and storage room are conveniently positioned adjacent to the parking area at the rear of the home.

The ground floor comprises four bedrooms and two bathrooms, all dedicated to the children. Separate zones between the teenagers and younger siblings were created through the use of a large shared living and games room. From the children’s living room, full height glazed stacking doors allow for a seamless transition to the north facing outdoor living and pool area.

The design and location of the swimming pool is an integral and spectacular feature of this home. The cantilevered pool design is an eye-catching addition to the streetscape, with a viewing window from the pool also offering river views. A built-in spa completes the outdoor entertainment area.
