Synthetic grass has been used in sports arenas around the world since the 1970s. Since then, however, the technology has continued to advance and has revolutionised the way homeowners are choosing to landscape their properties. Emily Williamson chats with Sylvia Fellows from All Seasons Synthetic Turf to find out everything you need to know about synthetic turf.

Western Australians are spoilt when it comes to their climate and the endless opportunities to enjoy the sunshine. There is nothing worse, however, than creating a beautiful outdoor area to entertain family and friends, only to have one of the most important elements failing to meet your needs. A beautiful and lush grassed area in your backyard not only adds to the overall aesthetic, but provides a place for the kids to play and adults to relax. Fortunately, with synthetic turf now readily available, homeowners no longer have to spend their time and money keeping their lawn looking immaculate.

WHAT IS IT?

Synthetic turf is usually made from polyethylene, put together on carpet machines and bound with a polyurethane or latex backing. Good- quality synthetic turf is made from ‘yarns’, which provides a softer feel underfoot and a more realistic appearance. Fellows says it is important to choose a turf for your environment and All Seasons Synthetic Turf only uses yarns suitable to withstand the West-Australian climate.

“The latest CoolPlus yarn technology is scientifically proven to help keep grass 30 per cent cooler than other turf products on the market.”

“Our yarns are Australian-made with IR-reflective CoolPlus Polyethylene, and its backing is reinforced three times with polypropylene hybrid emulsion.

“The latest CoolPlus yarn technology is scientifically proven to help keep grass 30 per cent cooler than other turf products on the market. It is not only aesthetically pleasing, but was designed specifically with Perth’s harsh climate in mind.”
The company’s turf is made to last up to 25 years and is manufactured right here in Australia in conjunction with Advanced Polymer Technology Australasia (APTA).

WHERE CAN IT BE USED?

Fellows says that synthetic turf can be used in a variety of areas around the home or business.

“Turfs that replicate cooch or buffalo grass can be used in the front or backyard, on balconies, rooftops or verges, in the pool area, on a putting green, or in a children’s play area – either residential or commercial.”

HOW IS IT INSTALLED?

Installing synthetic turf is easy and can be done in a matter of days. The first step is to remove the existing lawn, rocks or sand and create a level base. Once the surface is evenly balanced, a road base, such as crushed rock, is applied. This needs to dry and be completely level before the synthetic turf can be installed.

This stage can be quite difficult, depending on the shape and size of the yard, and how many joins are needed. Covering the lawn with white-washed sand is the last stage to ensure a good infill is achieved.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS?

Synthetic turf continues to grow in popularity due to its aesthetic appeal and exceptional convenience. Fellows says she has noticed a growing demand from homeowners to install synthetic turf in their outdoor areas for many reasons, including living with water restrictions, not wanting to use pesticides, or if they suffer from hay fever.

“Synthetic turf is great for areas with little, or not enough sun, as well as smaller gardens where grass can be difficult to grow and maintain. It is also perfect for the West-Australian climate and accompanying water restrictions because it does not require watering.

“It is not only aesthetically pleasing, but was designed specifically with Perth’s harsh climate in mind.”

“In fact, it requires very little maintenance, which is perfect for homeowners who want the look of real grass without the work or allergies associated with it.”

These days people are very time poor and leading busy lives, but they still want to be able to come home and relax in a beautiful outdoor space that is safe for the whole family. Whether they are battling with allergies or water restrictions, no matter the budget, synthetic turf is the perfect option to provide lush, green lawn 365 days of the year.
